A College Grad Dealing With Hurricane Harvey

I’ve been living in my apartment for two years now, and I haven’t had any big issues. There was that time when the neighbors above me “accidentally” knocked a firecracker into a candle and blew out a window at three in the morning. I’m still not quite sure how that happens? I had glass all over my patio, and it scared the wits out of me, but other than that, it’s been relatively peaceful.

Living by the reservoir has its perks. I like living next to nature where I can see the open Texas sky, and the air seems fresh around here. When I moved here, I took my time finding a place where I wanted to stay for several years. After graduating college, I was sick of having to pack and repack every summer. Moving is my least favorite activity.

But, it looks like I’m going to be moving again.

I thought I was startled when the firework went off while I was dead asleep, but that was nothing to the horror I felt when I looked out my patio door and finally realized that floodwater was creeping towards my apartment. It was still raining, so at first, I wasn’t sure if the water was rising or if it just some optical illusion. Turns out it was definitely rising and it ruined my apartment.

I didn’t have renters insurance, and my landlord is still making me pay rent. I want to move, but I can’t afford to pay for two places. My options are pretty limited, but I think I found a solution. It sounds like it might be a headache, but I’m going to talk to an attorney about my legal options here.

I found a reservoir claims attorney that is taking on cases just like mine. I’ve heard some people discussing class-action lawsuits and getting on a list with a bunch of people, but that doesn’t seem ideal to me. Once you sign up on the list, they tell you just to wait, and they’ll let you know when (, and if) anything happens. I’m not the kind to sit around and wait. I want to do something now!

If I go with the class action lawsuit, not only do I have to wait for it to be approved, but I’ll be splitting my winnings with everyone else. I lost some valuable stuff, and I don’t want to give up my share of the winnings to someone who didn’t have the same amount invested. I’m not greedy, I just believe in fairness.

I’m not sure what is going to happen, but I need to talk to someone. This whole hurricane thing is got me stressing out – HARD – and I’m done dealing with this by myself. The website says its free to chat with someone about my case. I think I’m going to do it – wish me luck!
